Advancing Health Care for Two Centuries

Founded in 1824 in Charleston, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is home to the oldest medical school in the South. We're also the state's only integrated academic health sciences center, serving South Carolina through education, research, and patient care. Our university hospitals, research facilities, clinics, and patient care sites serve communities across the state.

Each year, MUSC educates and trains more than 3,000 students and 850 residents and fellows in six colleges: Dental Medicine, Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. 

In 2021, MUSC brought in more than $328 million in biomedical research funds, continuing to lead the state in obtaining this funding. 

As the clinical health system of MUSC, MUSC Health is dedicated to delivering the highest quality patient care while training generations of compassionate, dedicated health care providers to serve the people of South Carolina and beyond.

More than Just MUSC

The Medical University of South Carolina is more than just MUSC. What started as a small medical college in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, has transformed into a comprehensive, statewide academic medical system. We care for patients and educate the next generation of health care professionals across South Carolina and beyond.

MUSC employs over 26,000 people. Although we're all part of the same team, we may have differing benefits depending on our role within the larger organization. The Medical University of South Carolina is made up of three entities: Medical University Hospital Authority, Medical University, and MUSC Physicians.
