The Indo-German Centre for Sustainability (IGCS) is a joint project between the RWTH Aachen University in Germany as representative of a group of German universities (TU9 and Christian-Albrechts University (CAU) Kiel) and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) in Chennai, India, which is hosting the centre. The IIT Madras has sixteen academic departments and a few advanced research centres in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organised in a unique pattern of functioning. A faculty of international repute, a brilliant student community, excellent technical & supporting staff and an effective administration have all contributed to the pre-eminent status of IIT Madras. The campus is located in the city of Chennai, previously known as Madras. Chennai is the state capital of Tamilnadu, a southern state in India. The Centre, which was founded in 2010, comprises four research areas of sustainability: water management, waste management, land use and energy. It is part of the DAAD initiative “A New Passage to India” and receives funding from the German Ministry for Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF) through the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst, DAAD).
