The increasingly complex global political situation is a threat to the fabric of modern society on many different levels. It has now become essential, in ways it has never been before, that we put in place innovative precautions for our own protection and safety and push the boundaries of international research into information and communication technology. It is within this precise area of expertise that the applied research into defense and security issues being carried out at the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics FKIE comes into its own. Approximately 380 members of staff are currently working on the development of innovative technologies targeted at analyzing intelligence and the early detection and prevention of potential threats. Our expertise is also being applied increasingly to the civil sector, in areas such as the protection of the environment and the prevention of natural disasters right through to business management and the protection of business critical infrastructures.
