About the employer

About the Graduate School Electrochemical Energy Storage (GS-EES)

The GS-EES supports about 70 doctoral researchers doing their PhD in the field of electrochemical energy storage. Our research topics are Lithium-ion batteries, post Lithium batteries, fuel cells, etc.

The GS-EES operates within CELEST, the Center for Electrochemical Energy Storage Ulm & Karlsruhe.

CELEST and Partners

CELEST pools the know-how of 31 institutes of its partner institutions: Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Ulm University, and the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW), bridging form fundamental science to large-scale cell fabrication and testing.

The GS-EES is in close relation to the Cluster of Excellence POLiS, Post Lithium Storage of KIT and Ulm University. POLiS investigates a new generation of post-Li electrochemical energy storage systems, which overcome the limitations of current battery technology.

Education / Training

The modular qualification program can be tailored to the individual needs of each doctoral researcher. It is dedicated to assist the doctoral researchers in

  • successfully pursuing their research in the multidisciplinary field of electrochemical energy storage from fundamental science to processing and application.
  • building an (international) network.
  • Improving their professional skills for their future career in industry and academia.

The figure shows the three columns of the GS-EES qualification program, namely the core program (block course, summer school and research abroad), the scientific training (workshops, seminars and lectures) and professional skills training (Communication, management, good scientific practice, diversity aspects)

Mentoring

To ensure high quality scientific mentoring, each doctoral researcher is guided by a Thesis Advisory Committee, which is comprised of the professor supervising the doctoral researcher, a second professor from a matching discipline, and a senior researcher involved in the day-to-day supervision.
