We are looking for 3-4 Postdoctoral researchers in a variety of fields related to research of sustainable materials in the fields of energy, health and manufacturing. 

The tasks are fixed term and the starting time of the positions is 01.10.2025, or based on mutual agreement, and the duration of the employment relationships are 2 years. 

The postdoc positions relate to Profi7 – university profiling funding from Academy of Finland. The open positions are related to the area of SUSMAT, the goal of which is to enhance the design of sustainable materials and manufacturing with data-driven approaches to solve global energy, health, wellbeing and industrial production challenges. The end goal of the SUSMAT project is to realize a paradigm shift in experimental materials research and transfer this knowledge to the industry, accelerating the adoption of sustainable technology. 

We have open positions in a large variety of topics, in multiple research groups across several departments of University of Turku: 

  • Exploiting simulations to design and optimize externally driven active bio-matter for adaptive, functional, and energy harvesting biomaterials (Asst. Prof. Alberto Scacchi

  • Developing edge-AI proof-of-concept application(s) for GdCaMnO/Al-memristor crossbars (Prof. Petriina Paturi

  • Developing in-situ operando alloying technology for local adjustments of material properties to create gradient properties into bulk material during additive manufacturing to realize features created by computational material optimization (Prof. Antti Salminen

  • Design for sustainability in re- and demanufacturing – life cycle effects of material properties and microstructural changes (Assoc. Prof. Sampsa Laakso

  • Chemical Ligation in Sustainable Manufacturing of Xenonucleotides (CLiMaX) (Prof. Pasi Virta

  • Manufacturing of large-scale high-entropy oxide thin and thick film electrodes from industrial waste using thermal spray coating technology for sustainable batteries and hydrogen production: computational materials design and experimental synthesis (Asst. Prof. Ashish Ganvir) 

  • Natural Language Processing for extracting materials information from scientific literature to guide materials design (Assoc. Prof. Milica Todorović

  • Development of recyclable, flexible, lightweight materials for flexible electronics and energy conversion&storage (Prof. Carita Kvarnström

  • Second life in energy systems: prospects of reusing solar panels and/or batteries (Prof. Kati Miettunen

All of these topics provide you with exciting opportunities to deepen your knowledge in the chosen topic and broaden your horizons through multidisciplinary collaborations in the vast research space related to sustainable development. 


Who we are looking for

Requirements

The positions require an active approach, diligence and cooperation skills, as well as experience in laboratory work (if applicable for the topic) and an excellent PhD degree in a field that supports the research topic. We also appreciate prior knowledge and interest in the relevant field, as well as earlier experience with research of sustainable materials or manufacturing in the intended field. 

The qualification requirements of the positions are stated in the University of Turku rules of Procedure. A person selected for the post of postdoctoral researcher is required to have a doctoral degree and the ability to do independent scientific work as well as having the necessary teaching skills. In addition, the applicant should have publications in international peer-reviewed journals in their field. Candidates who will graduate soon (doctoral students) are also encouraged to apply. In these cases, the title is project researcher, and the duration of the contract is 6 months. If the relevant degree is obtained within these 6 months, the contracts will be upgraded to the correct title with the appropriate change in salary. 

Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are required in the positions.

Salary and trial period

The salaries are determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel when negotiating the employment contract. For a postdoctoral researcher, the salary is at levels 5-6 on the job demands chart. In addition, a personal work performance component will be paid. The total salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be approximately 3500 €/month at the beginning of the employment. The position is subject to six-month trial period. If a project researcher is hired for the position, the salary will be approximately 3000 €/month and three-month trial period.
