The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology has about 200 employees and is one of the largest departments of mathematical sciences in the Nordic countries. The department consists of three divisions: Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability, Applied Mathematics and Statistics.

We are searching for a Senior Lecturer to join the Division of Algebra and Geometry, https://www.chalmers.se/institutioner/mv/forskning/avdelningen-for-algebra-och-geometri/
The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain a high-level research program with emphasis on algebra and geometry and participate in the undergraduate and graduate level teaching in mathematics at our department.
We expect the successful candidate to strengthen and complement the research conducted at the Division of Algebra and Geometry, for instance in Algebraic geometry, Complex geometry and Number theory.
We are committed teachers with extensive and broad experience in all aspects of undergraduate and graduate education in mathematics. We are appreciated by students and are continuously seeking opportunities for pedagogical improvement. Our ambition is to teach mathematics at the highest international level.
Job assignments
The assignments comprise
- conducting research in mathematics,
- teaching courses in mathematics at basic as well as advanced level,
- administrative tasks at the department,
You should actively seek challenges and new opportunities in order to develop your work. Communication and collaboration skills are important since many of your duties will be carried out in collaboration with others. You are expected to collaborate with actors outside academia, for instance, in collaborative research or popular science activities.
If you have no previous University teacher’s pedagogical training, you are expected to take such courses within one year from the start of the employment. The university offers courses in teaching and learning in higher education.
Eligibility
The eligibility for this employment follows from the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg. A completed PhD degree or an equivalent foreign degree in a subject area relevant to the position or similar scientific competence acquired in some other way is required.
The official language at the University of Gothenburg is Swedish and we normally teach in Swedish at the bachelor level and in English at the higher levels. Therefore good language skills, and the ability to teach, in English are required. If you do not speak Swedish when employed, you are expected to learn and be able to teach in Swedish within two years of employment.
Assessment criteria
The assessment of your application will primarily be based on your scientific skills and pedagogical qualifications, which will be scrutinized with the same care.
When assessing your scientific competence, special attention is paid to publications of high quality. Quality bears greater weight than accumulated output of scientific papers. Research with important contributions after your PhD degree as well as international scientific collaboration are considered as strong merits.
When assessing your pedagogical merits, special attention is paid to your ability to plan and teach courses in mathematics.
We will choose the applicant who, after the overall assessment of skills and potential, is considered to have the best prerequisites to carry out the tasks included in the job description, to collaborate with others, and to contribute to a positive development of activities at the department. The overall assessment will also take into account how the applicant’s qualifications and plans complement and strengthen the activities at the department.
Previous leave of absence due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances will be taken into account in the assessment and therefore, the reasons for the length of such leaves should be pointed out when listing the merits and experience in the application.
