The Department of Chemistry and Sustainable Technology at the Faculty of Science, Forestry, and Technology invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) position (in Environmental Engineering or Environmental Biotechnology) on the Joensuu Campus. The position will be filled for a 3-year term from 1 May 2025 onwards (or as agreed).

Role and salary

The Department of Chemistry and Sustainable Technology is establishing a Sustainable Bioprocess Research Group, dedicated to developing innovative biotechnological solutions for a more sustainable future. We are seeking a motivated Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) to join our team. This research project focuses on developing an integrated approach for carbon and nitrogen recovery from wastewater.

As our new Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) your main responsibilities will include:

  • conducting laboratory experiments (bioreactor operation and analysis of metabolic pathways and microbial communities) related to the project
  • analyzing experimental data and interpreting results
  • writing scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • presenting research findings at international conferences to disseminate project outcomes

The main task of a Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) is to conduct research for their dissertation and to complete postgraduate studies.

The position will be filled for a 3-year term from 1 May 2025 onwards (or starting date as agreed). The position will be filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to the Doctoral Researcher’s (PhD student's) own doctoral dissertation work and studies. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job-related salary element and a personal salary element. For a Doctoral Researcher, the job-related salary element is based on levels 2–4 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff depending on the stage of the applicant's doctoral research and postgraduate studies. The personal performance salary element is 6–50% of the job-related salary element. At the beginning of the employment the total salary will be approximately EUR 2,585–2,720 /month.

Requirements

  • a master’s degree in environmental engineering, environmental biotechnology, or a related field
  • a person to be appointed as a Doctoral Researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e., the Doctoral Researcher must be eligible to apply for and must have been granted the right to pursue postgraduate studies in the Faculty’s Doctoral Programme LUMETO
  • a good command of written and spoken English

The following will be considered an advantage

  • experience in molecular data analysis, including -omics techniques, and bioreactor operation
  • strong motivation to work in an international research environment and willingness to collaborate with multiple research groups across the EU
  • experience with programming languages for data analysis, modelling, or bioinformatics

The Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology operates on the Kuopio and Joensuu campuses of the University of Eastern Finland.
