The Center for Research in Economic Development (CRED) at the University of Namur invites applications for a PhD position in economics under the supervision of Professor Catherine Guirkinger. The position is funded by the F.R.S.-FNRS (Belgium) and is expected to start in September 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter). Funding is secured for the full duration of the PhD (4 years, with an initial 2‑year contract).
The PhD student will contribute to a research project examining the recent large-scale conversion movement—particularly among women—to New Christian churches in Sub‑Saharan Africa. The project explores the hypothesis that conversion is, at least in part, motivated by women seeking economic emancipation within a constraining social order, with specific attention to the intra-household dynamics underlying these choices.
The research combines multiple empirical strategies, including the design and implementation of original lab‑in‑the‑field experimental games and the collection of survey data. The PhD student will be actively involved in developing survey instruments and experimental protocols, coordinating fieldwork (likely in southern Benin), conducting data analysis, and contributing to the writing of research papers.
CRED focuses on issues of economic development, with particular emphasis on micro‑institutions, collective action, market development, and political economy. Much of its research relies on original data collected in various countries by its members. The center brings together six permanent academic staff, roughly ten PhD students, and several post‑doctoral researchers.
We are seeking outstanding candidates with a strong interest in development economics. The fellowship amounts to approximately €2,300 per month. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
