Together, Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences form a higher education community that places faith in people and scientific knowledge. Leading experts in the fields of technology, health and society are changing the world at Finland’s second largest multidisciplinary higher education institution. www.tuni.fi/en

The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University is inviting applications for a tenure-track position in metals technology.

Materials science and engineering are keys to enabling technologies when our society is transitioning from fuel-intensive era towards material-intensive era. Lightweight, durable, long-lasting, and environmentally friendly materials play critical roles in our aims for low-carbon and resource-efficient society. The ever increasing environmental and economic requirements demand for visionary innovations, pioneering solutions, and revolutionary breakthroughs in the processing, characterization, and bottom-up design of materials to improve their performance and durability in extreme conditions. Advanced metals will play a key role in addressing these demands.

To address these demands, Tampere University (TAU) is looking for a tenure-track professor in the area of Metals Technology. The position will be placed in the Materials Science and Environmental Engineering Unit Unit (MSEE) of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS). The materials science and engineering at TAU focuses on experimental and numerical characterization of material properties and behavior from the nanoscale up to macroscopic structures as well as on developing advanced processing and manufacturing methods with the aim of improving the ultimate performance and lifetime of materials in demanding operational environments. We develop lightweight energy-saving material solutions, added- value coatings and surface treatments, bio-based multi-material solutions, and experimental and numerical solutions for evaluating the mechanical performance of materials. We have active collaboration with local and international industry and research organizations.

Job description
We are seeking highly motivated and accomplished candidates in the broad area of Metals Technology for conducting high-level scientific and technological research with high societal impact. Your interests in this field may focus on, for example,

  • Scientific research, development and innovation activities based on physical metallurgy, material aspects in versatile and flexible manufacturing technologies, use of recycled and green metallic materials, improving long term mechanical durability and corrosion resistance in challenging environments, novel heat and surface treatments, and joining methods.

Whilst you may have background in basic or applied research, you are expected to develop your own scientific research profile. Similarly, you are expected to develop strong networks, especially with industries, to promote the societal impact of your research. You will also be responsible for teaching and education in your field covering courses and supervision of M.Sc. thesis projects. Your research should strengthen and be complementary to our present research in engineering materials science and the faculty, where your contribution should extend to cover all relevant materials in the broad area of metals technology.

Requirements
You should have a doctoral degree in materials science and engineering or a related field. Further requirements for each tenure track level are as follows:

Assistant Professor
We require:

  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.

   Associate Professor
 We require:

  • track record of independent scholarly activity on a high international level
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position
  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding.

Professor
We require:

  • high-level scholarly expertise
  • experience of leading scientific research activities
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction
  • track record of winning external research funding
  • track record of international scholarly activity

Please, read more about our Tenure track career path here.

We offer

We are inviting you to be a part of a vibrant, active and truly international research community. The multidisciplinary research environment offers opportunities to develop research expertise via collaboration, e.g., with different fields of computational physics, mechanical engineering, materials science, and environmental engineering. We are offering an advanced research infrastructure in these areas.

Your initial appointment as Assistant Professor / Associate Professor is fixed term for five years. Subject to successful performance, you will become tenured after the first five-year period. Full Professors are appointed on a permanent basis. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for an Assistant Professor is approximately 4500-4900 EUR/month and for an Associate Professor approximately 5200-5700 EUR/month and for a professor approximately 6300-6900 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be negotiated for candidates with exceptional experience and/or performance.

You will be supported by a start-up package that will ease your transition to TAU and in setting up your research group. The start-up package will be negotiated based on your individual needs and may contain several elements from our support instruments.
