The Experimental Quantum Optics group is an internationally known, divers research group in the fields of quantum optics. Within the ERC Starting Grant project TWISTION, we are also investigating the field of atom physics and structured matter waves. Benefiting from our quantum optics expertise as well as the strong research infrastructure of Tampere University we are currently setting out to pioneer charged matter wave experiments at this exciting interface between quantum optics and atom physics. For these efforts, we are now looking for a talented postdoctoral researcher who is motivated to work on fundamental research on the highest level.
Job description
The Experimental Quantum Optics group is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on our setup on structured matter waves of electrons and ions. The project is well-funded through the ERC grant and is already in full swing to investigate complex electron and ion beams. The focus of the project is to explore complex structured matter waves, study novel mechanisms to generate and measure them, as well as to investigate the underlying physics. Besides performing research on the highest level, the position will provide the opportunity to work in a vivid research group, which is embedded in a highly active research infrastructure.
As an employer we are committed to promoting diversity within our team and would like to encourage all interested applicants, irrespective of their gender and backgrounds to apply!
If you are interested in working in a young, divers research group to establish a novel branch of atom optics research in newly equipped laboratories, we are happy to receive your application and look forward to welcome you to our open stimulating research environment.
Requirements
Candidates must hold an internationally recognized PhD degree in quantum physics research, ideally in the field of atom physics and matter waves. If the degree has not yet been completed, applicants must complete their degree no later than 30 September, 2025. Excellent written and spoken English skills are essential. Knowledge in programming languages, e.g., Matlab, Pytyhon, or similar are highly appreciated. Expertise in quantum foundations, matter waves, and atom physics are advantageous. In case desired, the position will also enable to contribute to ongoing quantum optics experiments. The candidate should further like to work in an international, collaborative research group, enjoy working with colleagues (national & international) and help in supervising Bachelor, Master, or PhD students and teaching tasks.
We offer
The Postdoctoral position will be offered for up to two years with a possibility of extension and will be preferably filled during summer or fall 2025 with some flexibility in the starting date. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees. The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands level 5-6 (teaching and research staff). A typical starting salary of Postdoctoral Researcher is around 3800-3900 EUR/month.
We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University. The group is embedded into a strong research hub at the Tampere University, Finland, with activities ranging from nanofabrication, nonlinear and theoretical optics, metamaterials, and laser developments.
Tampere University also leads the Photonics Flagship initiative PREIN of the Academy of Finland. Hence, our research takes place in a world-leading research institution with collaborations within a large network of experts across the world.
