The Electrical Engineering unit at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences (ITC) in the Tampere University invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in the field of Power Electronics. 

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking to hire a Doctoral Researcher for a fixed-term position till 31.3.2028, with the possibility of extension. The purpose of the role is to contribute to advancing academic and industrial knowledge in the field of power electronics. The research focuses on the development, implementation, testing, and monitoring of low- and high-level optimal control methods for the power electronic converter interfacing a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) with the grid. 

As a Doctoral Researcher, you will begin by developing and testing control methods in a simulation environment such as MATLAB. In the next phase, the methods will be implemented in a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulator. Finally, the control strategies will be deployed and validated on a low-voltage laboratory prototype. The results will be disseminated in scientific peer-reviewed journals, international conferences, doctoral network events and events with industry. 

The tasks of all Doctoral Researchers may include teaching duties that amount to approximately 5% of their annual working hours, unless there are justified reasons to the contrary.

REQUIREMENTS  

  • You need to have a master’s degree (or equivalent eligibility for doctoral studies) from electrical engineering, or a related discipline in science or engineering completed on 1 August 2025, at the latest.  
  • Experience in at least one of the following is necessary: power electronics, control (modern control theory, optimal control), embedded programming, and microprocessors.  
  • A strong interest in mathematics, optimization (e.g., mathematical optimization methods) and machine learning is very important.  
  • You also need to have an inquiring mind, enjoy problem-solving and be able to think independently while also being able to work in a team.  
  • A good command of English, both in writing and in oral presentations, is required.  
  • Successful candidates must be pursuing or should be accepted to study towards a doctoral degree in computing and electrical engineering. Please visit here for more information on eligibility requirements.

WE OFFER

The duration of the fixed term employment is till March 31, 2028. The start of the employment is planned to be as soon as possible after the selection is made but the start date can be negotiated. A trial period of six (6) months applies to all new employees. 

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Doctoral Researcher is placed on level 2–4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is approximately 2750 EUR/month and it will increase during the studies depending on the progress (up to about 3500 EUR/month).
