Örebro University is shaping the future through internationally competitive research and offers professional-oriented education that ranks among the best in the country. You can now apply for the position of postdoctoral researcher in musicology at the School of Music, Theatre and Art and be part of Örebro University's ongoing journey with a focus on research and education.

Subject area

The subject area for this position is musicology.

Background

Örebro University is a rapidly growing university with a strong position in research both internationally and nationally. In musicology at Örebro University, we conduct research at the forefront of the subject. Music is studied as an individual, social and cultural phenomenon in order to develop knowledge about the relationship between music and people. Characteristic of our research is a critical focus on how culture and society shape the conditions and conditions for this relationship. Research on music, power and inequalities is one of our strengths.

We are now announcing a postdoctoral position linked to the project Musical Cultural Heritage – Power and Resilience in Crisis and Conflict, which is funded by the Hamrin Foundation. The project aims to highlight the importance of musical cultural heritage by studying people's and social organizations' ways of relating to their musical and cultural heritage in times of crisis, with a focus on cultural identity, power relations and representation in the media. The project will be a combination of media analysis and policy analysis to study how news reporting, social media influencers and official policy documents address musical heritage in crisis or conflict situations at the international or national level. We are therefore looking for a candidate who has theoretical and methodological knowledge of media representations, a research interest in the role of music in conflict and/or music and nationalism, and the importance of music from a cultural heritage perspective to develop and carry out the project.

Duties and responsibilities

The appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is intended to enable persons who have recently been awarded their doctoral degree to consolidate and develop primarily their research skills.

The successful candidate is expected to independently collect and analyse research data and present and present the research results in various academic and public contexts. This may involve oral presentations at conferences and article writing. The duties also include feedback to the funder halfway through the project period, as well as participating in the research environment's seminar activities.

Qualifications

Those qualified for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher are applicants who at the time of appointment hold a doctoral degree in a topic relevant to the project or have a degree from abroad deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree. Applicants with doctoral degrees that have been awarded no more than 3 years prior to the application deadline are to be considered first. The applicant may not previously have held a position as a postdoctoral researcher for more than one year in the same subject and at the same higher education institution. The employment period is 2 years with an oral presentation of the project's progression to the Hamrin Foundation after year 1. If the person during the period of employment has been on parental leave, the period of employment is to be extended by the corresponding number of days. The period of employment may also be extended in the event of absence due to illness.

Assessment criteria

A basis for the assessment is the applicant’s ability to disseminate information and communicate; collaborate and engage with the wider community; and facilitate utilisation of the university’s research. In addition, the applicant’s suitability for the position will be assessed. Suitability refers to the applicant demonstrating the personal qualities required to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities at hand, the ability to cooperate with other members of staff, and the ability to contribute to the development of the operations.

Particular attention is to be paid to the applicant’s prospects of contributing to the future development of both research and education. Importance is also attached to a demonstrated ability and ambition to embark on a career within academia.
The applicant should be able to demonstrate a specific methodological competence regarding data collection, management and analysis, which can be useful in the project (e.g. policy analysis, discourse analysis, ethnographic methods, etc.). Good knowledge of several different national contexts, as well as knowledge of several languages, is an advantage. Theoretical knowledge of collective memory and cultural heritage is also an advantage.

We place great emphasis on the ability to collaborate with other staff and contribute to the development of the research environment. Experience of collaboration in a larger research environment is therefore desirable.
