The Luke is looking for a Research Scientist, postdoc, sustainability assessment of bio-based products, for a 3-year position. The task is related to research on bio-based products and solutions with a focus on developing LCA methods.

This postdoc position is part of Postdoctoral Programme for Research Institutes in Finland. The programme is funded from the Finnish government's multi-annual research and development (R&D) funding plan. The programme recruits 85 new postdoctoral researchers to 12 Finnish government research institutes between 2025 and 2028. The aim of the Programme is to strengthen RDI competence in areas important to society and business. Postdoctoral researcher will conduct goal-oriented high-level research at the interface between the academic community, industry, and administration. The Programme supports postdoctoral researcher’s networking and mobility between sectors.

The selected person will also take part in Luke Doctoral and Postdoctoral Programme, which coordinates, develops, and monitors the qualification of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers at the Natural Resources Institute Finland.

The main duties and key responsibilities of the Researcher Scientist, postdoc, are the implementation of high-level research focused on environmental sustainability in the context of the bioeconomy, particularly in the development and application of life cycle assessment (LCA) methods. The work also includes methodological development, with an emphasis on improved and harmonized assessment approaches, such as the integration of LULUCF aspects (land use, forestry practices, carbon storage) into environmental impact assessments.

The research will be carried out in collaboration with Luke’s researchers working in the fields of bio-based production, sustainability, and natural resource use assessment, as well as under the guidance of a designated mentor.

The work also includes tasks related to project management, such as preparing research plans, writing funding applications, and scientific communication targeted at different audiences.

The nature of the task requires strong analytical thinking, the ability to work independently, an interest in developing research methodologies, and good communication and collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary environment.

In this task, you can develop your expertise as part of a broad expert network and contribute to the sustainability assessment of new bio-based solutions that have a significant societal and ecological impact.

Our expectations of the applicant

• recently completed a doctorate (typically no more than 5 years ago) in one of the following fields: environmental science, forestry, soil sciences, economics, technical engineering, or other relevant disciplines
• demonstrated ability to publish in high quality peer-reviewed publication forums
• strong skills or interest in life cycle assessment (LCA), data analytics, simulation methods, and/or techno-economic assessment
• experience in interdisciplinary research applicable to sustainability assessment, particularly in the utilization of renewable natural resources, use of biomass, and the examination of their environmental impacts
• excellent written and oral English
• ability and willingness to work collaboratively
• ability and willingness to work independently and learn new skills

We will consider it an advantage if you have good written and verbal skills in Finnish, experience in developing LCA methods, particularly in the assessment of biomass use and land use changes, the ability to apply quantitative methods in research, and scientific understanding of ecosystem functioning and comprehensive environmental impact assessment.
