Luke is looking for a postdoc researcher, impacts of land use changes on fish populations, for a 3-year position. The aim is to combine the land use and aquatic monitoring data to gain new insights on the effects of land use changes on water bodies.

This postdoc position is part of Postdoctoral Programme for Research Institutes in Finland. The programme is funded from the Finnish government's multi-annual research and development (R&D) funding plan. The programme recruits 85 new postdoctoral researchers to 12 Finnish government research institutes between 2025 and 2028. The aim of the Programme is to strengthen RDI competence in areas important to society and business. Postdoctoral researcher will conduct goal-oriented high-level research at the interface between the academic community, industry, and administration. The Programme supports postdoctoral researcher’s networking and mobility between sectors.

The selected person will also take part in Luke Doctoral and Postdoctoral Programme, which coordinates, develops, and monitors the qualification of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers at the Natural Resources Institute Finland.

The main duty of the Researcher Scientist, postdoc, is to study and model the effects of land use changes and climate change on water quality (particularly eutrophication and brownification), aquatic ecosystems and especially fish populations in Finnish inland and coastal waters. The work is based on Luke’s and other authorities’ time series data sets on land use and fish communities. A central aspect of this work is to bring together the land use, loading, and fish community data sets that have largely been analyzed separately. One of the aims of the project is also to develop indicators for the effects of land use on aquatic environments. The exact project plan will be designed in collaboration with the successful candidate.

The research will be carried out in collaboration with Luke’s interdisciplinary researcher community. The work will be supervised by Research Professor Laura Uusitalo and Principal Scientist Mika Nieminen. The work also includes project management tasks and participation in national and international project proposal preparation processes. The nature of the task requires an interdisciplinary research approach, good understanding of aquatic ecosystems, and skills in modelling, data handling and analysis.

In this task, you can combine large, underutilized monitoring data sets and do impactful, high-quality research as part of Luke’s multi- and interdisciplinary research team.
