PhD candidate in Life Cycle Assessment of Port Call activities

We are seeking a motivated PhD candidate to evaluate the environmental impacts of port operations in the Netherlands using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The research will be conducted within the Port Call for Net Zero project, that seeks to evaluate the current and future environmental impacts of port activities in selected Dutch ports. Apart from achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and a 55% emission reduction by 2030, as agreed in the European Green Deal, European seaports must reduce many other pressing environmental concerns that need to be addressed in port waterways, such as biodiversity loss, seafloor disturbance, invasive species, and noise. New methods to support coordinated decision-making and actions to develop collective net-zero strategies for the port call with limited environmental tradeoffs is therefore urgently needed. The PhD candidate’s objective will be to evaluate current and future port call processes using LCA and develop new marine environmental impact indicators. The results of the PhD research will inform port operations in the Netherlands and globally, as part of the project objectives.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop own research plan (in alignment with the project and assisted by supervisors)
  • Establish LCI models for the port call process
  • Evaluate existing marine impact categories, and develop novel cause-effect pathways for marine impacts
  • Establish probabilistic inventories for prospective LCA modelling
  • Disseminate research at conferences and workshops

Selection Criteria

  • Experience with LCA, ideally prospective LCA
  • Programming skills, preferably python
  • Knowledge or interest about environmental impacts on marine environments
  • The candidate should also be curiosity-driven, independent, and have a pro-active attitude.

Terms and conditions
We offer an initial one-year contract, with an option to extend for up to four years based on performance, following the pay scale P in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Salary ranges from € 2.901,- gross per month in the first year to € 3.707,- gross per month in the fourth year based on a full-time position.

At our institution, we believe in flexibility and work-life balance! With a full-time position (38 hours per week), you are entitled to 232 vacation hours per year, which is equivalent to 30.5 vacation days (based on a 38-hour work week). If you value flexibility, you have the freedom to adjust your working hours. For example, you could choose to work 40 hours per week, earning extra compensation hours. Alternatively, if you prefer a shorter work week, you can work 36 hours per week by using some of your vacation days to create more time for yourself. You’ll work closely with your supervisor to tailor your schedule in a way that suits both your needs and the team’s.
