Project

This PhD project addresses the critical challenge of electromagnetic interference (EMI) in symbiotic assistive health technology, aiming to prevent potentially hazardous system failures. The research will focus on leveraging compressed sensing and sensor fusion to generate precise and compact data, enabling both real-time EMI detection and post-failure analysis in resource-constrained embedded systems. The detection approach will integrate key indicators such as bit error rates in communication systems and control/data-flow error monitoring to enhance system reliability. Additionally, this project will advance sensor-fusion methodologies by incorporating dynamic and modular safety monitoring mechanisms.

The PhD candidate will be responsible for developing novel, cost-effective EMI sensors capable of continuous monitoring, ensuring that environmental disturbances remain within safe operational limits for assistive devices. These sensors will also facilitate the validation of AI-driven EMI failure detection, enhancing the real-time resilience and robustness of these technologies.

This PhD position is part of the AERIALIST Doctoral Network, an initiative dedicated to transforming assistive health technology by making it more intelligent, reliable, and safe for real-world applications. AERIALIST integrates cutting-edge machine learning with human-centered engineering to develop next-generation solutions such as rehabilitation robotics, powered prostheses, and telehealth systems. Through a multidisciplinary research approach and collaborations with industry leaders, AERIALIST aims to train the next generation of experts who will drive innovation, promote equitable access to healthcare, and enhance the quality of life for individuals worldwide.

We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic, passionate, and communicative researcher who holds a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering and/or computer science, with outstanding academic achievements. Candidates should demonstrate a strong affinity

for EMC, artificial intelligence and/or risk management.

Offer

This is more than just a PhD position—it’s an opportunity to be part of an internationally recognized network of researchers through the MSCA AERIALIST Doctoral Network (https://dn-aerialist.eu/). As a PhD candidate, you will be based at KU Leuven’s Bruges Campus, with exciting secondments at TU Delft (NL) and Ottobock (GE).

We offer:

  • A fully funded 3-year PhD scholarship (extendable to 4 years).
  • Specialized doctoral training to boost your expertise.
  • Opportunities to collaborate in groundbreaking research and participate in international conferences.
  • Access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and a range of university benefits (health insurance, etc.).
  • A dynamic, passionate team of fellow PhD students and test engineers.

KU Leuven receives Researcher Allowances, consisting of a living allowance, mobility allowance and, if applicable a family allowance, for the recruitment of the Doctoral Candidate. These Researcher Allowances will be used to cover the Doctoral Candidate’s remuneration,

including all employer and employee’s taxes and contributions.
