Job Title: Assistant Professor in Data Science
Location: IE University (Madrid, Segovia)

Position Overview:

IE University’s School of Science and Technology invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Data Science with a specialization in Earth Observation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, Satellite Data Analysis, and Climate Modeling. We seek candidates with a robust academic background, a strong research portfolio, and a passion for using data science to tackle some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. The ideal candidate will focus on leveraging satellite imagery, GIS systems, and advanced data analytics to understand and address global issues such as climate change, natural resource management, urban planning, and disaster mitigation

We value candidates with the capacity to collaborate in applied research projects led by the Impact Xcelerator at IE School of Science and Technology, specifically in one of the three focus areas: Climate/Energy, Healthcare, or Financial Systems. The ability to contribute to multidisciplinary research initiatives that apply cutting-edge technologies to real-world challenges in these sectors will be key to the role’s success, providing opportunities to work closely with industry partners and stakeholders to drive innovative solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses on topics such as Remote Sensing, Geospatial Data Analysis, Satellite Image Processing, Climate Data Visualization, and Environmental Data Science.
  • Lead impactful research projects using satellite imagery, GIS tools, climate models, and big data techniques to address global environmental issues, while actively securing competitive research funds. 
  • Collaborate with faculty across disciplines and industry partners to develop innovative applications of earth observation technologies in sectors such as agriculture, urban development, environmental monitoring, and disaster risk reduction, in connection to the IX Energy and Sustainability Lab.
  • Supervise and mentor undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. students, particularly in the use of spatial data and climate modeling tools.
  • Participate in the development of new curricula, focusing on experiential learning and the practical application of earth observation and climate science.
  • Engage in academic service and play a role in the strategic development of the School of Science and Technology.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Data Science, Geospatial Sciences, Environmental Science, Climate Science, Remote Sensing, Geoinformatics, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated research excellence in areas such as GIS, Earth Observation, Remote Sensing, Satellite Data Analysis, Geospatial Analytics, or Climate Modeling.
  • A strong publication record in top-tier journals and conferences relevant to geospatial analysis, environmental data science, and climate research.
  • Experience designing and teaching data science courses with an emphasis on earth observation and GIS applications.
  • Ability to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects involving climate modeling, geospatial technologies, and environmental policy.
