ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY

Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, and technical and social services on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With each of its 11 faculties and more than 100 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes that are grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its employees as well as its students.

YOUR TASKS

  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research on scientific research concerning consumer behavior in general and the health of vulnerable consumers (e.g. with lower socio-economic position) in particular.
  • This research task also includes a substantial contribution to fundraising. In addition to working out project applications for research projects at the FWO, BOF, HORIZON and/or other funding channels, you will actively look for cooperation opportunities to valorise academic research. You take a leading role in this.
  • You support teaching tasks. You participate in teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate level. You supervise and take co-responsibility for research methodology subjects (such as Research Methods I) and/or marketing subjects (such as marketing planning, consumer behavior). These subjects can be taught in both Dutch and English.
  • You supervise large groups of master's students in Business Engineering, Applied Economics and/or Business Economics in (Dutch-language) teaching assignments and master's theses.
  • In addition, you spend part of your assignment on internal and external services. You are co-responsible for the development of the research group. For example, you give seminars to doctoral students, help supervise doctoral students, etc. The specific tasks are determined in consultation with the ZAP team.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a PhD in Applied Economics. For degrees obtained outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence from NARIC must be submitted. The diploma requirements must be met on the start date.
  • You have already done research in line with the research line: promoting healthy and sustainable dietary behaviours among vulnerable consumers, e.g. with a lower socio-economic status.
  • You have distinguished yourself as a promising researcher during your doctoral work.
  • You have a keen interest in student counselling in academic training.
  • You have relevant scientific publications in international scientific journals that have a wide circulation and call on experts for the review of submitted manuscripts. Publications in the research domain are a must, as are publications listed in Web of Science.
  • International research experience is highly recommended.
  • You speak and write excellent English and Dutch (in the context of teaching assignment).
  • You have experience in supervising master's theses.
  • You have experience with advanced qualitative and quantitative research techniques. Experience with Nvivo (or alternative qualitative software), SPSS syntax and basic knowledge of R and/or STATA is recommended.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a part-time (80%) and temporary appointment for a period of 3 years. A second appointment of up to 3 years can follow, subject to a favourable evaluation of the first term
  • Even if you have already been appointed earlier (whether or not at another university and whether or not in the same field of discipline) in a first term of up to three years, you can apply.
  • The second appointment does not have to be immediately connected to a first term. Your appointment will start on 15 September 2025 at the earliest
  • Your remuneration will be determined according to salary scale AAP5. More information about our salary scales
  • All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, ecocheques, etc. A complete overview of all our fringe benefits
