Employing more than 15.000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities.

With its 11 faculties and more than 85 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.

For the (faculty/department/research group) we are looking for a m/f/x

Doctoral fellow

YOUR JOB

  • Making a detailed analysis of different lithic assemblages from the Final Palaeolithic and Mesolithic of the Belgian Meuse valley (taking into account typological and technological variability, changes in raw material preferences, as well as the spatial distribution of the finds within their respective find contexts). In addition, you will assist in a reappraisal of the chronological framework of these assemblages, in order to document the regional evolutions that took place in the lithic industries throughout the abovementioned period.
  • Your research is moreover part of a broader FWO research project titled “Climate change and human response at the Pleistocene-Holocene transition in the Belgian Meuse basin (13,000-6000 cal BP) (Prof. Dr. Crombé, Prof. Dr. Vandendriessche, UGent; Dr. Sophie Verheyden, KBIN). Within the latter, speleothem formations are investigated using U/Th series dating and stable isotope analyses to gain a better understanding of the local climate and landscape changes that occurred in the Meuse valley and the impact they could have had on the prehistoric occupations.
  • You will be employed as a PhD student at Ghent University. The abovementioned research will therefore always be carried out in view of obtaining a PhD degree.

Job profile

  • You hold a Master’s degree in Archaeology (with a specialization in Prehistoric archaeology).
  • You have verifiable experience studying Northwest European lithic assemblages and/or you dedicated your Master’s dissertation to the analysis of lithic artefacts (preferably from a Final-Palaeolithic or Mesolithic site).
  • You have a solid understanding of French and English.
  • You are able to collaborate with other researchers and work as a part of a larger research team.
  • You have experience working with GIS-software packages (e.g. QGIS, ArcMap).

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer a full-time position as a doctoral fellow, consisting of an initial period of 12 months, which - after a positive evaluation, will be extended to a total maximum of 48 months.
  • Your contract will start on 01/09/2025 at the earliest.
  • The fellowship amount is 100% of the net salary of an AAP member in equal family circumstances. The individual fellowship amount is determined by Team Personnel Administration based on family status and seniority. A grant that meets the conditions and criteria of the regulations for doctoral fellowships is considered free of personal income tax. Click here for more information about our salary scales
  • All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.
