The Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich is a center of competence for Swiss and international security policy. It offers security policy expertise in research, teaching, and policy consultancy. We specialize in connecting academic insight with real-world applications, providing expertise to Swiss government agencies, international organizations, and the wider public.
The CSS Think Tank covers a range of critical areas, including Swiss and Euro-Atlantic security, global geopolitics and geoeconomics, risk and resilience, cyber defense, defense policy and armaments acquisition, and conflict resolution and mediation.
The CSS Think Tank is seeking a Senior Researcher with expertise in global security, with a particular focus on great power competition and cooperation and the implications for European and transatlantic security.
The ideal candidate will possess deep knowledge of global geopolitical developments and be able to analyze them from multiple perspectives. Great power dynamics in the context of a rising China and major changes in US foreign policy will be a major issue, with the security doctrines of select middle powers being another important topic. The impact of such developments on Switzerland’s strategic environment, and particularly on European and transatlantic security, as well as on the evolving global security order should also be addressed. This role involves producing impactful, policy-relevant research, building international networks, liaising with government actors, and contributing to CSS’s teaching and outreach initiatives.
We offer you an exciting opportunity to develop and showcase your expertise in a think tank that is both university-based and close to the policy-making environment in Berne. The position is non-permanent: The term of appointment is three years and may be renewed for another three years. In addition, we offer attractive working conditions and a workplace in the center of Zurich. Further training and career development are central elements of our personnel policy.
