For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

Scientific project leader for the coordination of combined synchrotron X‑ray and laboratory microscopy experiments

Limited: 3 years | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: FSMA014/2025 | Deadline: 05.06.2025 | Full-time/Part-time

DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The DESY NanoLab has an active in‑house research program within the fields of X‑ray physics and nanoscience. In addition, it provides characterisation and preparation methods which are complementary to the techniques available at the different DESY accelerator-based light sources. The P21.2 high‑energy beamline at PETRA III is a versatile high-energy X‑ray diffraction and imaging beamline for materials science applications. For a project on lightweight materials in collaboration with an industrial partner, we are seeking a talented project leader to coordinate combined synchrotron X‑ray and lab-based microscopy experiments, as well as the work with the industrial partner.

About your role:

  • Manage the project and progress regarding the project plan and milestones
  • Collaborate closely and efficiently with all project partners from P21.2, DESY NanoLab, DESY Innovation and Technology Transfer (ITT) and the industrial partner
  • Co-supervise personnel employed in the project (postdocs)
  • Supervise and conduct innovative instrumentation and method development
  • Conduct synchrotron experiments at selected X‑ray beamlines and scanning probe microscopy experiments
  • Guide and develop large data set analysis from polycrystalline materials
  • Supervise correlative synchrotron and scanning probe microscopy corrosion experiments
  • Present the project results at scientific conferences and industry trade fairs
  • Manage the scientific reporting for the funding agency

About you:

  • PhD in materials science, engineering science, physics, chemistry or equivalent qualification
  • Extended experience with characterization of materials with (high energy) synchrotron radiation and/or scanning microscopy and/or surface-sensitive X‑ray diffraction methods
  • Extended knowledge of the corrosion of metals and/or their mechanical properties
  • Extended practice in conducting experiments at synchrotron radiation sources and/or scanning probe microscopy techniques
  • Proven leadership skills by supervision of postdocs and PhD students
  • Interest to work in applied and industry-relevant science
  • Programming skills, e.g. Python & experience to analyse large data sets
  • Positive and engaging personality with ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent communication skills incl. excellent knowledge of English and ability to summarize and present project results to the scientific as well as the industrial community
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills

Good reasons to join:

You will benefit from our family‑friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV‑AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland-Ticket) at both locations.

For further information, please contact Andreas Stierle at +49 40 8998‑2005 ([email protected]) and Ulrich Lienert at +49 40 8998‑3165 ([email protected]).

Please submit your complete application documents (letter of motivation and research interests, CV, list of publications, relevant certificates and three letters of references). Please use our online tool for the submission of the letters of reference: Additional application documents
