Do you want to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of battery technology, electrochemistry, modelling and data science? We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the Division of Systems and Control, Department of Electrical Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology. The position focuses on developing improved methods for the diagnosis and prediction of lithium-ion battery ageing.

About us

At the department of Electrical Engineering research and education are performed in the areas of Systems and Control, Communications, Signal processing, Electric Power Engineering, Antennas and Optical Networks, and Biomedical engineering. We work with sustainable and smart solutions to societal challenges, such as energy efficiency and electrification in areas ranging from transport and production systems to communication solutions and biomedical engineering.

The Automatic Control division conducts research and education in the analysis and control of dynamic systems. Our work combines fundamental control theory with applications in areas such as transportation, environmental and biological systems, and electric power systems. The division also teaches control engineering at both undergraduate and graduate level at Chalmers, including within the master’s programme Systems, Control and Mechatronics.

About the research project

Lithium-ion battery degradation is governed by complex and coupled physical processes and is strongly affected by operating and environmental conditions. However, the internal health of batteries remains difficult to assess accurately from routinely available measurements, particularly under realistic and heterogeneous use. This project aims to develop robust and physically interpretable methods for battery ageing diagnosis and prognosis. The postdoc will work with both laboratory and real-world operational data, and develop and validate diagnostic and prognostic models. The project provides an opportunity to work with advanced battery-testing facilities and large-scale battery datasets, enabling validation under controlled as well as practical operating conditions.

The postdoc will work in an interdisciplinary environment at the interface of automatic control, electrochemistry, and machine learning. The position will also involve close collaboration with another postdoctoral researcher working on a complementary project in physics-informed machine learning and system identification methods. Together, the two projects will connect methodological advances with real-world battery applications.

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to independently conduct high-quality research and collaborate effectively in an interdisciplinary environment.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • A doctoral degree in battery science, computational material science, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, physics engineering, automatic control or a related field.
  • Research experience in physics-based battery modelling, battery ageing analysis, battery management systems, electrochemical characterisation, or related areas.
  • Experience in designing and analysing battery experiments, including ageing studies and diagnostic measurements.
  • Familiarity with machine learning and data analysis.
  • Strong programming skills, for example in Python and/or MATLAB, and a strong publication record.

What you will do

The main responsibility of the postdoc is to conduct research in line with the project and publish high-quality scientific articles in leading journals and conferences. You will plan and conduct battery simulation and some experiments, analyse data, develop and validate diagnostic and prognostic models, and contribute to research using real-world battery datasets.

You will collaborate closely with researchers in automatic control, battery modelling and experimental battery research, as well as with academic and industrial partners. You will also have opportunities (not mandatory) to supervision of master’s and co-supervise PhD students. There may be opportunities to engage in teaching at undergraduate and master’s level.

Contract terms

The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. The expected starting date is as soon as possible, depending on the visa/work permit process if you are applying from outside Sweden. The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment.
