Join us for an exciting and excellent Doctoral student journey to create the future of Data-driven Product Realization!

About us

At the Department of Mechanical Engineering, we unite the power of technology, people, and society to drive the transition toward a sustainable future. Through research, education, and collaboration, we create solutions that connect materials to mobility, ideas to impact – shaping a resilient and sustainable world. We make impact.

The Division of Product Development conducts research and education across the entire product development lifecycle, from early concepts to industrialization. Together with industry, we develop methods and tools that enable robust, sustainable products while improving design decisions, reducing risk, and ensuring product quality.

The position may also be hosted within the Division of Systems and Control at the Department of Electrical Engineering, depending on the candidate’s profile and selected research direction.

About the research project

DRIVE PR – Data-Driven Product Realisation is a major research and innovation initiative at Chalmers University of Technology and the Wingquist Laboratory, carried out in close collaboration with leading Swedish industrial partners. The advertised position will mainly be connected to DRIVE PR, but may also be linked to related projects within data-driven product realisation, digital engineering, systems engineering, geometry assurance, automation, or model-based development. For Model-Based Systems Engineering we look for a candidate to related SIJET project, focusing whole engine modeling together with GKN.

The research aims to transform industrial product realisation from data-enabled practices into truly data-driven ways of working, where engineering design, simulation, AI, digital twins, manufacturing systems, communication infrastructure and decision support are connected to real industrial challenges and using the rapidly advancing digital infrastructure and AI technologies.

The positions will be hosted mainly in one of three Chalmers research environments: Geometry Assurance & Robust Design, Systems Engineering Design, or Automation. The exact placement will depend on the candidate’s profile and selected DRIVE PR research track. Together, these environments cover geometry assurance, robust design, systems engineering, product development methods, automation, autonomous systems and industrial digitalisation.

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

  • To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in in mechanical engineering, production engineering, automation, systems engineering, computer science, applied AI, data science, applied mathematics, industrial digitalisation, engineering simulation, optimisation, or another relevant field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • A strong interest in both scientific research and industrial application.
  • Ability to collaborate across disciplines and work in close interaction with industrial partners.
  • Analytical ability, curiosity, independence and motivation to contribute to long-term research challenges.

*for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • modelling and simulation
  • CAD/CAE, tolerancing, geometry assurance or production systems
  • AI, machine learning, data analytics or synthetic data
  • digital twins, digital threads or model-based systems engineering
  • automation, control, sensing, communication systems or industrial digital infrastructure
  • industrial product development or manufacturing
  • knowledge of Swedish is considered a merit

What you will do

As a doctoral student, you will conduct research within one of the DRIVE PR research tracks, in close collaboration with industrial partners. Depending on the final research profile, the position may also contribute to related projects, such as initiatives on model-based systems engineering in aircraft engine systems development in SIJET.

Possible research directions include:

  • data-driven geometry assurance, tolerancing and variation simulation
  • automated generation of simulation models from CAD and lifecycle data
  • digital twins and digital threads for product realisation
  • data-driven robustness and feedback from manufacturing, inspection, repair and use
  • systems engineering, modular product architectures and system-of-systems design
  • AI-supported decision support, synthetic data, model learning and hybrid modelling
  • digital infrastructure for connected engineering and manufacturing systems
  • human-in-the-loop decision support and trustworthy industrial AI
  • Model Based Systems Engineering for Whole Engine Design (for the SIJET project)

The work will include developing methods and models, working with industrial data and demonstrators, publishing scientific results, and contributing to project workshops and learning activities. You will be part of an interdisciplinary research environment with strong links to industry, including access to real industrial cases, datasets, testbeds and digital product realisation tools. You will also:

  • Take courses at an advanced level within a relevant Chalmers graduate school: Product and production development | Chalmers
  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing.
  • Participate in project meetings, workshops, demonstrations and learning activities within DRIVE PR.
  • Contribute to collaboration with industrial partners and to dissemination of research results.
  • The position generally also includes teaching at Chalmers’ undergraduate level or other departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 percent of working hours.

Contract terms

  • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
  • The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
