The University of Wuppertal invites applications for a professorship in Condensed Matter Theory. The position will be based in the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. We are looking for an outstanding personality who will continuously develop this area in research and teaching.

DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS

  • The applicant is expected to have an outstanding international track record of research in a subfield of condensed matter theory. The focus of the work should be on systems of strongly correlated electrons and their topological excitations, frustrated quantum magnets, or ultracold atomic gases. The phenomenology of these systems should be studied with quantum field theoretical and numerical methods, also with regard to possible applications in future quantum technologies, quantum computing, and simulation.
  • The position holder will complement the existing research activities in condensed matter physics at the University of Wuppertal and participate in their further development.
  • An active collaboration in joint research projects and in the acquisition of third-party funding for larger scale cooperative research projects jointly with the existing condensed matter physics groups and the Interdisciplinary Center CM@S for Smart Materials and Systems at the University of Wuppertal is expected. Therefore, a good compatibility with the experimental condensed matter physics groups and with the goals of CM@S is desired.
  • The applicant should represent theoretical physics in teaching in its entirety and should be motivated to contribute to interdisciplinary teaching. The participation in academic self-administration is expected.
  • You are expected to achieve adequate German language skills within the first two years of service, within the first year at level B2 and at level C1 within a total of two years at the latest.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completed degree (university or university of applied sciences) in physics or a closely related field;
  • Special aptitude for academic work, usually demonstrated by the quality of a doctorate, a topic relevant to the advertised position is desirable;
  • Further relevant scientific achievements performed during a first professorship include junior professorships, habilitations, employment as a research assistant at a university or at a non-university research institution and scientific positions in business, in administration or another social field in Germany or abroad;
  • Pedagogical aptitude, which is proven by appropriate previous experience or, exceptionally, demonstrated by excellent performance in the appointment procedure.

You are able to demonstrate your qualification for the position by an excellent publication record in renowned journals, international experience e.g. through stays abroad or participation in international research collaborations, experience and success in the acquisition of third-party funding, and your research and teaching concept.
