Job description

When the tyre rolls over an uneven road surface, it starts to vibrate. Excessive force transmission and its combination with tyre resonances can cause discomfort. There are many different mechanisms at play which generate tyre noise. One of them is stick-slip phenomena which is responsible for high-frequency transient noise generation. It is therefore paramount to understand how tyre parameters such as cavity, construction, compounds, reinforcements, and tread pattern are responsible for stick-slip and stick-snap noise generation. This assignment aims to develop numerical and test methods to further study the influences of these parameters.

Goals and prototype deliverable of the project are: Document fundamental understanding on how tyre-road interaction generates stick-slip and stick-snap noise. Develop simulation methods to predict stick-slip and stick-snap noise mechanisms. Develop measurement methods to predict stick-slip and stick-snap noise mechanisms. Design know-how DoE to demonstrate how to influence stick-slip and stick-snap noise mechanisms. Evaluate prototype tyre design concepts with reduced stick-slip and stick-snap noises.

Your profile

  • MSc – Mechanical or Automotive Engineer
  • Required skills: Noise and Vibrations
  • Other preferred skills: MATLAB and Python programming, Noise simulation tools (COMSOL or MSC Actran), Signal processing (preferred)
  • Soft Skills: Takes lead, international mindset, collaboration, and co-ordination skills

Our offer

  • A very challenging position for two years.
  • A tailor made post-master design programme that has an educational component (50%) as well as a design project (50%).
  • On successfully completing the program, you will receive a certified and recognized degree. You will be entitled to use the academic degree EngD (Engineering Doctorate), and will be registered as a Technological Designer in the Dutch register kept by the Royal Institution of Engineers in the Netherlands (KIVI)
  • A salary of € 2.618,-- gross per month.
  • There are excellent benefits including a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, and a solid pension scheme.
  • A minimum of 232 leave hours in case of full-time employment based on a formal workweek of 38 hours. A full-time employment in practice means 40 hours a week, therefore resulting in 96 extra leave hours on an annual basis.
