The Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) contributes multidisciplinary expertise in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Life Sciences and Medicine. Through its dual mission of teaching and research, the FSTM seeks to generate and disseminate knowledge and train new generations of responsible citizens, in order to better understand, explain and advance society and environment we live in.
This project is framed within the FNR-BRIDGES funded project ANTOINE (Anticipatory Train Optimization with Intelligent management), where the student will work in a team with experts in transportation and logistics, and in collaboration with the national freight forwarding operator CFL Multimodal. The student will work on a thesis provisionally entitled ‘Integrated stochastic optimization methods for resource management of intermodal and rail terminals’. In the project, the candidate will study the joint shunting (or blocking) wagon problem considering maintenance scheduling. This means that decisions at the short term (daily) should consider long term impact in terms of maintenance scheduling and overall costs.
The PhD student is embedded in a group of PhD students at MobiLab and will also interact with colleagues at LCL.

In its very international environment, the MobiLab team performs research in traffic & transport analysis, planning & management of transport operations & mobility. The team is led by Prof. Viti and is currently formed by a research scientist, two post docs and seven PhD students. The team is very well known internationally, with many ongoing national and international collaborations with top universities, research centers and industrial partners.
