PhD position on water vapour observations and data assimilation (f/m/x)

The announced position is funded by the German Weather Service (DWD) within the programme „Extramurale Forschung“ with the goal to develop new procedures and methods or improve existing ones that are relevant for DWD operations.

YOUR TASKS

  • Setup, operate and assess novel ground-based water vapour lidar and scanning microwave radiometer measurement systems
  • Participation in observational campaigns of the Hans-Ertel-Centre for Weather Research
  • Simulation of observations within the DWD model ICON
  • Characterize the impact of novel water vapour profilers by means of data assimilation experiments in ICON
  • Active participation in research communication (seminars, conferences, publication in international journals)

YOUR PROFILE

  • MSc in Meteorology or a related field
  • Convincing and demonstrable knowledge/experience in atmospheric remote sensing and/or atmospheric modelling
  • Advanced programming experience with state-of-the-art UNIX or LINUX operating system
  • High willingness to collaborate with scientists of the University of Cologne, DWD and other partner institutions and to establish new scientific cooperations
  • Ability to work in a team and independently
  • Very good communication skills in written and spoken English

The position is available immediately on a part-time basis (29,87 hours per week). The contract is to be filled for a fixed term until 31.12.2027. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary is based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public sector.
