We have recently developed a new live-cell structural biology method based on cell engineering and advanced fluorescence microscopy. Our approach allows visualizing the structure of complex molecular assemblies directly in living cells and thus we are capable of solving key questions in cell biology that were not accessible by other techniques (Picco et al, 2017, Cell). The student will combine this approach with super resolution microscopy and genetics to resolve the higher-order mechanism that controls exocytosis in the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Exocytosis is an essential cellular process conserved in all eukaryotes that is directly involved in cell growth, establishment of cell polarity and neurobiology.
-MSc degree in Biophysics, Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry, or similar.
-Expertise in yeast genetics or fluorescence microscopy. Experience in vesicle transport/image analysis is a plus.
-Highly motivated, enthusiastic and creative.
-Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
You will be employed on a 4-year PhD position in the group of Oriol Gallego at the department of Experimental and Health Sciences of the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) with starting date around autumn 2018. The student will be part of a newly emerging research lab devoted to study supra-molecular machineries that control cell growth. Our work also involves the development of new interdisciplinary techniques in the frontier between cell biology and structural biology. We are building a team of scientist with different expertise where you will be trained in a wide panel of disciplines and where you are expected to contribute and collaborate.
The department of Experimental and Health Sciences of the Pompeu Fabra University (www.upf.edu/web/biomed) is located at the PRBB, a scientific park hosting 6 research centers, including a new outstation of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory.
