The Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC) at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Barcelona seeks doctoral applications from talented students with a strong interest in research.
The UPF DTIC PhD program offers advanced training in a broad range of topics in the field of Information and Communication Technologies: (1) cognitive and intelligent systems, (2) audiovisual technologies, (3) networks and communications, and (4) computational biomedicine.
This is an innovative and unique program, which aims to provide a bridge between various disciplines in this field. The DTIC PhD program has been steadily growing and currently hosts around 130 PhD students and 40 PhD supervisors. The program received a Mention of Excellence award from the Spanish Government in 2011.
Despite its short history, ETIC is already recognized for its high quality research output and its international impact. From the beginning, we have emphasized scientific excellence in all its activities. This clearly shows when reading the CVs of the faculty members in this web site. ETIC is leading in number of researchers from the ICREA program of the Generalitat de Catalunya and with most grants of the European Research Council. It is also the department that most contributes in making UPF the top Spanish university in terms of ICT R&D funding from European funds. These, and other indicators, have placed ETIC within the first 100 departments in the world, according to the recognized ranking of the ARWU/Shangai. It is also the only computer science department distinguished in Spain as a Maria de Maeztu Unit of Excellence by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness
The DTIC's research community include 350 people from more than 50 nationalities with different scientific background, organized around 15 research groups groups pursuing a wide range of topics. This creates a dynamic environment to do excellent research.
The Universitat Pompeu Fabra was awarded in 2010 the distinction of International Excellence Campus by the Spanish Ministry of Education and it is widely considered to be one of the best universities in Spain (e.g. is the top Spanish university according to 2013 Times Higher Education Ranking).
UPF is located in Barcelona. Its excellent location on the shores of the Mediterranean, its gentle climate, its open, cosmopolitan character, its gastronomy and architecture make Barcelona an extraordinary place to live. The DTIC is sited in UPF's Communication Campus, which was opened in 2009 and is located within the vibrant 22@ technological district of Barcelona.
Students will pursue doctoral studies in one of the Research Areas of the department which include Cognition, Computation and Robotics, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Theoretical Computer Science, Natural Language Processing, Ubiquitous Computing, Information Retrieval and Data Mining, Cognitive Multimedia Technologies, Image Processing and Computer Vision, Image Processing for Enhanced Cinematography, Sound and Music Technology, Human-Computer Interaction, Graphics and Educational Technologies, Network Technologies and Strategies, Wireless Communications, Information Theory and Coding, Computational Neuroscience, Instrumentation and Biomedical Electronics, Computational Imaging and Computational Physiology, Analysis of Biomedical Data and Nonlinear Signal Analysis.
We encourage that, before applying, each candidate identifies one or several DTIC topics and research supervisor with whom he/she would like to work with.
These fellowships are articulated as Predoctoral Research Contracts (PRC) (Spanish regulations) and offer the following wage conditions:
The precise salary depends on the candidate’s background and the funded project the fellowship contributes to.
There are 3 possible types of PRC:
Teaching hours are carried out at UPF undergraduate engineering degrees (Computer Science, Telecommunication, Networks, Audiovisual Systems Engineering and Biomedical Engineering) according to the PhD student background. A knowledge of Spanish or Catalan is required on the 2nd year of fellowship for those teaching in 1st or 2nd year.
A list of ongoing funded projects is available here.
A number (to be determined) of these fellowships will be funded through the grant: Unidad de Excelencia María de Maeztu (id. Oficial MDM-2015-0502). It is also the only computer science department distinguished in Spain as a Maria de Maeztu Unit of Excellence by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.
Candidates for PhD positions must have completed 300 ECTS credits, 60 of those have to correspond to an official graduate, research oriented master's programme.
Candidates must have excellent academic qualifications and good command of English. Previous research experience and authorship of scientific publications will be a plus. Candidates from any nationality are eligible.
Candidates must apply to both the PhD program in ICT at UPF and the DTIC PhD fellowships (PRC). Please check our research areas and potential supervisors beforehand at: https://www.upf.edu/web/etic/doctorat
We encourage early applications, although there are currently three application periods.
We highly recommend candidates coming from outside the EU to apply before the last Application Period. Please ensure that all information -including reference letters- is uploaded before the deadline, as incomplete proposals will be disregarded.
