The Institute of Food Technology (ITAL) opens applications for the selection of candidates for a Young Investigator (YI) scholarship in the area of Investigation of Food Chemical Contaminants deriving from the migration of packaging materials.
The YI will be responsible for developing a research project to expand the Institute's activities in the area of Food Safety and Health, focusing on potentially migrating substances from food packaging. The aim of the project is to establish competence and infrastructure to study the occurrence, the potential migration and the toxicity of non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) in packaging materials intended for food contact.
The YI scholarship duration is 48 months and it will be funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP (www.fapesp.br/en), through its Young Investigator Award Program (http://fapesp.br/en/6251) and being part of the ITAL Institutional Development in Research Plan (PDIP - grant number # 2017/50349-0). The selected candidate will receive a Young Researcher Fellowship from FAPESP of R$ 8,377.50 per month. Additionally, the selected Young Researcher project, after submission to FAPESP and peer reviewing, may receive a Research Grant, as described in http://fapesp.br/en/6251.
Description of the Institute
The Institute of Food Technology (ITAL), linked to the São Paulo’s Agency for Agribusiness Technology (APTA) and to the Department of Agriculture and Food Supply of the State of São Paulo, conducts researches, develops products and technology, provides technological assistance and innovation and promotes the dissemination of knowledge in food and beverage packaging, processing and security. Today, ITAL’s activities are focused in the following areas: food technology, food science and quality and packaging. The technology area includes specialized units in meat products, cereals, chocolate, candy, confectionery, bakery products, dairy products, fruits and vegetables. The division of science and quality comprises chemical, physical, sensory and microbiological laboratories. The packaging area has specialized laboratories in metallic materials, glass, plastic and cellulose as well as in distribution and transportation packaging.
About the position
The YI should develop a research project to expand the Institute's activities in the area of NIAS in plastic packaging materials for food contact using high sensitivity analytical techniques such as gas chromatography with mass / mass detector (CG / MS / MS) for volatile and semi-volatile compounds and high resolution liquid chromatography with time-of-flight / mass spectrometry (LC / Q-TOF / MS) for non-volatile compounds.
The YI will carry out experimental studies considering different plastic materials and packaging structures for food contact and their conditions of use, such as type of processing, temperatures and pressures, storage and consumption conditions, and also considering the legislation requirements for approving such materials.
The candidate should run a project related to the proposed topic, assist in the orientation and co-orientation of students, collaborate with the researchers of the Institute and assist in the writing and reviewing of scientific works of the research group, as well as in the transference of technology and knowledge.
It is recommended that the young researcher have previous experience with plastic materials composition and chemistry, formulations, processing conditions and plastics degradation byproducts. It is also desirable that the YR have knowledge on toxicology and on the relation of chemical structures with potential carcinogenicity. The candidate should have high skills of instrumental analytical techniques, such as mass spectrometry, high performance liquid chromatography (LC / Q-TOF / MS) and gas chromatography (CG-MS / MS).
This position requires applicants with profile and skills as follows:
• Doctorate (PhD) in Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering or related fields;
• Experience in developing research projects abroad (minimum 6 months);
• Proven experience in analytical techniques such as gas chromatography, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry;
• Knowledge on food packaging;
• Knowledge on toxicology, chemical structure and potential carcinogenicity and studies of consumer’s exposure to contaminants;
• Knowledge on composition and chemistry of plastics, formulations, processing conditions and degradation byproducts of plastics;
• Ability to work independently and in collaboration with a multidisciplinary research group, making contact with researchers who can effectively participate in the project;
• Fluent English (reading, scientific writing and speaking);
• High impact scientific production in the proposed project area.
Application documents and dates
Please submit the application electronically, including the following documents:
a) Curriculum vitae summary according to FAPESP instructions - http://www.fapesp.br/en/6351 – (4 pages MAX);
b) Motivation Letter presenting your adherence to the established requirements (200 words MAX);
c) Short research proposal relevant for the area of interest of this position (300 words MAX).
All the information should be sent to the evaluation committee in a single pdf file, via the e-mails: firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com, with the title "Young Investigator Fellowship - Food Safety vs. Chemical Contamination: Migration of Non Intentionally Added Substances (NIAS) from food packaging or packaging materials". Any doubts may be clarified through the same e-mail addresses.
The closing date for applications is May 13th, 2019
The candidates' curriculum, with proven experience in the topics described above, and the submitted research proposal are key elements in the selection process.
The candidate will receive an email informing if he/she was preselected for this position by May, 20th, 2019. Two pre-selected candidates will be asked to submit a full Research Project to firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com by June, 10th, 2019.
