Summary

We are looking for a post-doctorate student interested in developing a research project at the Centre for Research in Ecology, under the supervision of Dr. Marisa Domingos, aiming at mapping the potential level of tolerance of tree species in urban remnants of Atlantic forest included in the Biosphere Reserve of the Green Belt of São Paulo (BRGB-SP) to environmental stressors.

The post-doctorate fellowship will be funded by São Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP (www.fapesp.br/en), as part of the Institutional Project “Challenges for biodiversity conservation in the face of climate change, pollution and soil use and occupation” (grant number 2017/50341-0). The selected candidate will receive the fellowship for 24 months in the monthly amount of R$ 7.174,80 free of Income Taxes, and additional 12 months abroad with the value according to the FAPESP table.

1. Description of the Institute

The Institute of Botany has a long tradition in scientific research directed to know and preserve the plant and fungi biodiversity from the existing biomes in the State of São Paulo (such as Atlantic forest and Cerrado). Its researcher staff has different specialties, covering the different areas of Botany, including: taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, ecology and biotechnology. The researchers at the Center for Research in Ecology, in particular, develop scientific projects in the following topics: floristics and phytosociology, ecology of populations and communities, ecology of disturbances in remnants of native vegetation disturbed by anthropic actions and restoration of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

2. Position summary and required experience

The post-doctorate student will conduct a field research in remnants of Atlantic forest in urban parks of the BRGB-SP, aiming at mapping the potential tolerance level of tree species to environmental stressors, such as climate change (mainly air temperature increases) and air pollutants (mainly nitrogen compounds and heavy metals contained in particulate matter), by formulating an index based on chemical and physiological/biochemical biomarkers. The effectiveness of the proposed tolerance index will be tested experimentally. The student will also collaborate on the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students and on other research projects conducted at the Center for Research in Ecology.

The following prerequisites are required for the application:

a) Doctorate in Botany, ecology or related concentration area obtained no more than 05 years ago;
b) Experience at the postgraduate level in developing studies involving chemical, physiological and/or biochemical aspects of plants subjected to stresses on disturbed natural environments, proven by means of at least 02 papers published as the first author (preferably in international journals);
c) Training in analytical protocols for measuring chemical and physiological/biochemical biomarkers of plants exposed to environmental stressors;
d) Training in multivariate statistical and mapping techniques;
e) Good knowledge of the English language (written and communication). Previous experience in multidisciplinary research and/or abroad is welcome.

3. Documents required for application

3.1. A motivation letter, evidencing the pre-requisites required (200 Words maximum);
3.2. Curriculum vitae according to FAPESP instructions (short CV FAPESP Instructions - http://www.fapesp.br/en/6351; 04 pages maximum);
3.3. Two recommendation letters.

The documents must be sent electronically (on a single PDF with the title "Postdoctorate_Ecology_Disturbances") to the email pdipibt@gmail.com

The candidates' curriculum, with proven experience on the topics described above, is a key element in the selection process.

4. Deadlines for application and result

The applications will be received until 20 August 2018. The candidates will receive an email until 30/08/2018 informing whether they were pre-selected or not. The final decision will be released at http://www.ibot.sp.gov.br/

Any questions or clarifications about this call, contact the responsible researcher (Dr. Marisa Domingos) through the email or mdomingos@ibot.sp.gov.br.
