NIOZ is looking for a highly motivated marine researcher to join the team of PIs, Assistants, Post-docs and PhDs in its Department of Coastal Systems (COS) as a Laboratory Programs Manager. This permanent position will be filled at the scale 11 /12 (e.g. post-doctoral level). The Benthic Laboratory Programs Manager sits at the interface between Principle Investigators and Assistant Staff and is responsible for managing the day-to-day field and laboratory activities of a diverse and dedicated team of employees in the NIOZ /COS Benthic Laboratory. The position is responsible for organizing and helping to conduct on-going, large-scale, annual research programs in the Dutch Wadden Sea including it geomorphology and biodiversity of intertidal and sub-tidal habitats.
THE INSTITUTE
NWO-NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research is the national oceanographic research institute. The mission of NIOZ is to perform academically excellent multidisciplinary fundamental and frontier-applied marine research addressing important scientific and societal questions pertinent to the functioning of oceans and seas. NIOZ also serves as national marine research facilitator (NMF) for The Netherlands scientific community, and stimulates and supports national and international marine research, marine education programs and marine policy development.
THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of COS integrates state-of-the art laboratory, field and modelling studies in frontier explorations of the drivers of the dynamics of marine species and food webs. COS examines how physical, chemical and biological processes interact to determine the distribution, composition and productivity of marine species - from primary producers to top predators - in marine habitats from the coast to inter/sub-tidal and pelagic environments. Research is conducted at both the regional and global scales.
THE VACANCY
You are responsible for the day-to-day management of the NIOZ / COS Benthic Laboratory, its staff and its projects. You organize and conduct field and laboratory research.
Management tasks:
1) Oversee the day-to-day management of employees and guests working in the Benthic Laboratory including mentoring and career development of staff to ensure that large-scale, Wadden Sea projects meet their goals and timelines and that jobs are being performed well;
2) Organize personnel and timetables for field and laboratory work of the Benthic Laboratory.
3) Carry out administrative actions such as staff assessments, prepare ISO certification, oversee budget(s), and organize interns;
4) Help prepare reports to funding agencies and to Head of Department.
5) Organize additional internal and external projects making use of the Benthic Laboratory;
6) Ensure a healthy and productive work environment for all Benthic Laboratory employees in accordance with the high standards of NIOZ and its diverse community.
Research-related tasks
7) Process benthic samples for ongoing projects (including independent taxonomic analyses);
8) Lead field work campaigns associated with large projects at the Benthic Laboratory (e.g. using the RV Wim Wolff);
9) Co-supervise early career researchers (PhD, MSc, BSc, etc.).
10) Maintain innovation in the techniques applied in laboratory and field research;
11) Produce peer-reviewed publications as senior author or co-author.
Outward facing tasks:
12) Represent NIOZ and products of the Benthic Laboratory at regional workshops and symposia.
