The project Societal perspectives on medical decision making with minors, or the Minors in Medicine Study (MiMeS) for short, is led by an interdisciplinary research group that has been working intensively together for several years on the medical decision process with minors. Indeed, Belgian law allows minors to make medical decisions on their own if their doctor considers them to be sufficiently mature. In practice, however, this still often raises questions and it is from these questions that the research unit came into being. Experts from family law (Prof Ingrid Boone), medical law (Prof Steven Lierman), bioethics (Prof Kris Dierickx), parenting and family studies (Prof Karla Van Leeuwen), family sociology (Prof Jan Van Bavel, Dr David De Coninck), paediatrics (Prof Jaan Toelen and Prof Peter de Winter) are enthusiastically looking into these issues. The ultimate goal of the project is to be able to give a voice to children and ensure that their rights are better exercised in practice. For the research within the project, the PhD student to be recruited will collaborate with two other PhD students: a master in law and a master in medicine. All researchers are a member of the KU Leuven Child and Youth Institute, which offers additional expertise, a broad research network and contact with societal stakeholders.

Project

The central research questions of the MiMes project are: "How are legal, ethical, psycho-educational and societal factors linked to paediatric medical decision-making, and what are the perspectives and preferences of physicians, parents, and minors in navigating complexities within the healthcare systems of the European Union, with a focus on Belgium and the Netherlands?" The research is divided into several work packages that will include a comparative legal, ethical and sociological exploration of the EU-27 member states, as well as a psycho-educational part. For this, we will use interviews, focus-group discussion and surveys with physicians, adolescents and parents and case studies of complex situations (chronic medical or psychiatric conditions, culture sensitive care, abuse and neglect…).
The ultimate goal of the project is to have a relevant societal impact. We will do this based on co-creation with diverse groups, which will result in ethical consensus statements, practice guidelines and postgraduate training for physicians (in the context of patient-centered care), insights to support lawmakers on future revisions of the patient law, parent/patient brochures, waiting room posters and a website aimed at children, adolescents and their parents.
