The Department of Global Public Health is a multidisciplinary department with the aim to advance knowledge about challenges and opportunities for public health in a local, national, and global setting. Many researchers at the department are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision makers at regional, national, and international levels.

Centre for Epidemiology and Community Medicine (CES) is a part of Region Stockholm. CES is assigned to work on the development of public health interventions to contribute to the good and equitable health of the population. CES are involved in the entire public health innovation chain - from epidemiological surveillance to supporting the implementation of health promotion and prevention.

Description of the subject area

The speciality of social medicine is characterised by expertise in human health and disease in interaction with the surrounding society. It is also characterised by knowledge of the determinants of health, such as the social and psychosocial causes of ill-health and disease, the impact of social structure, the environment, health care systems, working life and people's living conditions and lifestyles on health in different social groups, the distribution of health in the population, and social consequences of disease. The area of competence also includes clinical knowledge of common diseases, especially among marginalised groups.

Your mission

The overall aim of the position is to develop and strengthen social medicine research and education at Karolinska Institutet in close collaboration with Region Stockholm. You will lead and develop your own social medicine research and develop collaborations with other researchers nationally and internationally. The employment includes supervision of PhD students and junior researchers and teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels. Furthermore, you will lead a research group. The position also includes actively contributing to the department's other activities and to a strong scientific environment. The tasks also include, both as principal applicant and co-applicant, applying for research funding in national and international competition.

The position is combined with a clinical employment as specialist physician at the Centre for Epidemiology and Community Medicine (CES). The clinical part of the position is 40 percent. This means that you also are tasked with developing and disseminating knowledge about the health situation and public health interventions in Stockholm County, and that you contribute to the implementation of such interventions at the system level with a focus on the health care sector and other welfare institutions.  

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise; excellent scientific expertise; and, clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet ref no 1/23/2022).

It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, or have gained equivalent competence, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

The employment will be combined with an employment as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician or chief physician in social medicine at Centre for Epidemiology and Community Medicine, SLSO and therefore you must have a Swedish MD with specialist competence in social medicine as well as fulfil the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

You must be an internationally recognised researcher in social medicine. You shall demonstrate excellent scientific skills in research within social medicine and be familiar with epidemiological study design. You must also have a solid knowledge of the health care system as well as the welfare system in general and demonstrate good knowledge of how social structure, migration and welfare can affect the health of the population. You shall also demonstrate good competence in teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students in social medicine. Furthermore, you must demonstrate excellent leadership qualities and have received competitive research grants.

Since the employment includes clinical work and a teaching assignment, you must, besides excellent skills in English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale, CERS).

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research.

The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

It is particularly meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • Proven experience in research communication to the wider community.
  • Proven experience in collaborating with health care organisations and other welfare institutions.
