Ikerbasque Research Fellows 2018 Call for Postdoctoral Researchers

Ikerbasque - the Basque Foundation for Science, has launched a call offering 20 positions for postdoctoral researchers. These positions are financed by the Basque Government, the European Commission and the host institution where the researcher will develop her/his research: therefore the acceptance letter of the host institution is mandatory.

These five year Fellowships are directed to promising young researchers (R2-R3); they are intended to offer a track towards a PI role and independent research. The selected Fellows should be able to acquire the necessary skills for a research leader role. Ikerbasque is committed to offer a long-term career to the research community: Fellows in their 5th year can be assessed for a permanent position.

The applicants must have their PhD completed between 1/1/2007 and 31/12/2015.

Applications from women are especially welcomed. The eligibility period will be extended under special circumstances such as maternity.

Ikerbasque fully endorses the European Researchers’ Charter and the Code of Conduct for Researcher Recruitment. In 2011, our Human Resources Strategy received the “HR Excellence in Research” acknowledgement. Our calls are guided by an Open, transparent and merit-based recruitment (OTM-R) policy. More information available at www.ikerbasque.net/en/about-us/hrs4r

Candidates can only apply to one of the annual Ikerbasque calls, Research Professors or Research Fellows.

SUMMARY DATA

Deadline
15 March 2018, 13:00 CET

Contract
Ikerbasque offers 20 Research Fellowships: a 5 year employment contract including full social security.

Salary
The gross annual salary of the Fellowship is 35,000 €. The corresponding annual net income after taxes, social security and medical coverage would be approximately 26,000 €.

The researcher will also receive 10,000 € start-up funding.

There is a moving allowance for those researchers that come from a research institution outside the Basque Country:

  • 4,000 € gross for researchers coming from a foreign research institution.
  • 2,000 € gross for researchers coming from a Spanish research institution outside the Basque Country.

Candidates

  • Promising young researchers with a solid research track and international experience.
  • The applicants must have their PhD completed between 1 January 2007 and 31 December 2015. This eligibility period might be extended under special circumstances such as maternity or long-term illness.
  • Researchers with a permanent position in the Basque Country are not eligible under this call.
  • This call provides competitive opportunities to Basque researchers who want to develop long-term careers in the Basque Country. It is intended that at least 30% of the positions will be awarded to candidates who meet one or more of these requirements:
    • The researcher obtained her/his PhD in a Basque university.
    • The researcher graduated in a Basque university.
    • The researcher has lived in the Basque Country 10 or more years during her/his lifetime.
  • This call is cofinanced by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Cofund Programme of the European Commission; at least 50% of the positions will be awarded to candidates who meet the Marie Curie international mobility criteria, meaning the applicant has not lived, worked or studied in Spain for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to the deadline of this call.

Application procedure

  • Candidates must apply online at calls.ikerbasque.net.
  • At least two reference letters are mandatory, additional letters are strongly recommended. Candidates are responsible for contacting their referees so the letters are uploaded by the given deadline.
  • An acceptance letter from the Vice-rectorate or Director of the host institution is mandatory. Please note the letter from the host institution will also be assessed by the evaluation committee, so this letter should ideally describe the reasons for the institution to support the candidate, in addition to an explicit commitment to host the researcher in case he/she is selected.
  • An updated CV and the proposed research project must be uploaded in the application. This research project should ideally cover the 5 year period and be as detailed as possible.

Host institution
The Fellowships can be associated to the following Basque Research Institutions: Universities, BERC - Basque Excellence Research Centres, CIC – Cooperative Research Centres, Biomedical institutions and Technology Corporations.

  • These positions are financed by the Basque Government, the European Commission and the host institution where the researcher will develop her/his research.
  • The Host Institution covers 40% of the personnel costs; therefore the acceptance letter of the host institution is mandatory.

Evaluation Procedure
The external evaluators are members of the international scientific community. The selection committee will review the applications based on:

  • Scientific merit and research track
  • Relevance of research topic and latest publications
  • Concordance with Basque research capabilities
  • Added Value to the research group/organisation and the Basque Science System

A comprehensive step-by-step diagram of the Application and Selection Process is available in the next page of this document.

Outcome of the evaluation will be available in August 2018. List of the awarded Research Fellows will be published at www.ikerbasque.net and nonselected candidates will receive individual information on factors that led to rejection.
