Job description

You will conduct doctoral research as part of the SuperPatch project, a strategic basic research initiative in collaboration with UGent, Ghent Hospital, IMEC, and Hasselt University. The project aims to create a living construct in the laboratory to replace heart tissue for patients who have suffered severe heart trauma. This involves co-culturing different types of cells on a polymer scaffold. The research spans the fields of tissue engineering and bioreactor research (IMEC), with the support of the Department of Experimental Cardiac Surgery and Cardio-Circulatory Physiology. Our SuperPatch consortium is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic PhD student to carry out the work with human stem cells.
We offer a PhD scholarship for one year, which will be extended with another three years after positive evaluation, according to the general conditions at Ghent University. The earliest possible starting date is 01.01.2025.

Job profile

  • You hold a Master's degree in Biomedical Science; Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Bioengineering; or an equivalent qualification. The diploma requirement must be met by the date of appointment.
  • You have a strong interest in cell biology and the human body.
  • You are highly motivated to carry out scientific research.
  • You are familiar with research techniques involving pluripotent stem cells, differentiation, and maturation protocols, including the use of scaffolds and nanofibers.
  • You have the ability to independently develop and execute research projects.
  • You have demonstrated potential as a promising researcher, evidenced by your master’s thesis.
  • You possess excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • You have strong writing skills.
