The University of Wuppertal invites applications for a

Professorship (§ 36 HG NRW) in Modern German Literature

(legal basis: W 3 LBesG NRW).

The position will be based in the School of Humanities and Cultural Studies.

The position is to be taken up as soon as possible.

Expectations:

The professorship is assigned to the Department of German Studies. It covers German literature from the 18th to the 21st century in research and teaching and has a systematic focus on narratology. In particular, foci on 20th century and contemporary literature, including visual and/or audiovisual media, as well as on factual narration and literary theory is expected. We are looking for a strong researcher with an outstanding academic track record in these fields through relevant, innovative and internationally visible publications in prestigious journals. Experience in the conception and organization of public events (third mission) is also desirable.
We expect the willingness to actively acquire national and international external funding and the willingness to participate in research networks of the University of Wuppertal as well as in other interdisciplinary tasks, especially in connection with the 'Center for Narrative Research' (ZEF) and the e-journal for narrative research ‘DIEGESIS’.
International experience (e.g. in research cooperations and networks or scientific activities abroad), experience in the acquisition and management of externally funded projects as well as in the organization of collaborative projects are expected.
The position holder is expected to be actively involved in the promotion of young researchers. Applicants should have extensive teaching experience in the field of modern German literature. The tasks to be performed include

  • Teaching in all existing and newly established degree programmes in the subject area
  • Examination activities in all degree programmes of the subject
  • Participation in the (further) development of degree programmes

Requirements:

Besides pedagogical suitability, which has to be proven by appropriate previous experience or, in exceptional cases, demonstrated by excellent performance during the appointment procedure, the applicant is expected to have a particular aptitude for scientific work substantiated by the outstanding quality of a doctorate. Further scientific achievements must be demonstrated additionally and will be evaluated exclusively and comprehensively during the appointment procedure. The requirements for appointment to a first professorship include junior professorships, habilitations, employment as a research assistant at a university or at a non-university research institution and scientific positions in business, in administration or another social field in Germany or abroad.

The successful candidate is expected to actively support academic self-governance at the university.
